Belarusians have created “clothes of the future” that can imitate pain
At the annual consumer electronics exhibition CES 2018, traditionally held in Las Vegas, representatives of the Belarusian startup Teslasuit appeared, the purpose of which is to create “smart clothes of the future”. Most recently, the creators of the innovative costume told that they are still sorting letters from those interested in developing them. That’s because the costume created by Belarusians opens up huge opportunities that were previously available only in theory. So, what did the local craftsmen really do, and why did this cause such a stir?
The project was initiated by Sergey Khurs and Roman Aleksandrovich. Five years ago, they seriously thought about the idea of improving the realism of the effects of 5D cinemas. As a result, they founded the company VRTek, which today has offices in the cities of Minsk, Brest and London. In total, the company employs over 60 people. Thanks to the work of all these people, the Teslasuit suit, an “intelligent” piece of clothing covering the entire body of a person, appeared.
The suit has built-in electronic boards, a computing processor, RAM, and a battery, the energy of which is enough for almost 2 days of continuous operation. In fact, all this is one big computer that a person can put on himself. The suit weighs 2 kilograms. The most important element of Teslasuit is a motion capture system that recognizes the position of the human skeleton in space. The accuracy of the work is 1 mm in space and 0.5 degrees when moving. All this is necessary in order to create a virtual avatar of a person.
The second important element of Teslasuit is a feedback system that can affect the human body. Effects on the muscles using electrical discharges. This technology can be used when working in virtual reality. The simplest example is getting injured in a virtual environment. With the help of Teslasuit it will be possible to feel them for real. Another example is the weapon recoil simulation, tension, fatigue, and swelling of the arms due to being in one position. Also, the suit will not allow a person to stretch his arm forward, if in virtual reality it must rest against a wall.
The suit has a built-in climate control system, which is responsible for all the same simulation of sensations. According to the creators, it is needed to create the most believable sensations from a particular effect on the body. The designers also explained that the costume cannot convey the blow itself, since the impact is the transfer of kinetic energy and she simply has nowhere to take in the costume. However, Teslasuit conveys what can be called sensations after receiving a blow – pain and heat that spread to the muscles and skin.
In addition to entertainment, the Belarusian development can find application in sports and fitness. As it is easy to guess, the suit very well helps in the work of the muscles. It is possible to create special programs to stimulate certain groups of muscles. Does not bypass the country Teslasuit and medicine. There is a certain potential in the field of muscle stimulation and nerve endings of a person, for example, after a stroke. However, while such tests have not been conducted. The cosmonauts could also be interested in the costume, since it prevents muscle atrophy, which occurs in weightlessness.
As for domestic issues, everything is not so simple. The suit is still heavier than ordinary clothing, and therefore it is unlikely to wear it all the time. On the other hand, it can be easily washed. As for the potential suit breaking through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, the creators pay great attention to this issue. At the moment, the suit has several levels of protection that will carry out an emergency reboot of the entire system or even disable it when trying to harm the body.
